CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Tom Dolan, the Olympic champion and world-record holder in the 400-meter individual medley, won the event Friday in the Charlotte UltraSwim Classic.

Dolan finished in 4 minutes, 18.97 seconds, shaving about six seconds off his previous best of the year.

``I'm shocked that I swam such a good time,'' said Dolan, motivated by a newspaper prediction that he wouldn't win the 400 or 200 individual medleys in the Sydney Olympics.

``If you look at the predictions, all they did was write down what times were the best so far this season. But I've never been a good in-season swimmer. My training has always been focused toward the bigger events.''

The four-day meet is the second of five in the Cadillac Challenge Swim Series leading up to the Olympic trials in August in Indianapolis.

In other men's events, Neil Walker won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.83, Brendan Hansen took the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.57, and Tom Malchow won the 100 butterfly in 55.11.

In women's races, Martina Moracova won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.68 and the 100 butterfly in 59.49. Kristy Kowal took the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.10, and Cristina Teuscher won the 400 individual medley in 4:44.2.
