Woman Says She Was Kept Chained Through Seven-Month Marriage
Nov. 26, 1991
SEATTLE (AP) _ A woman says her husband kept her chained to the kitchen wall for the entire seven months of their marriage.
Edward Knighton, 31, of the Seattle suburb of Burien was charged Monday with unlawful imprisonment. He was being held on $30,000 bail for a Wednesday arraignment.
Tammie Knighton, 29, was rescued Saturday by relatives from out of state after her husband allowed her to write a letter to her mother in California, said Kathryn Goater, a senior deputy prosecutor.
Court papers allege Knighton displayed an irrational jealousy toward his wife, physically abused her and refused to allow her to leave their apartment unless he accompanied her.
Knighton handcuffed his wife to a chain attached to the the kitchen wall when he left for work, court papers said. He would return at lunch and release her so she could eat and use the bathroom, then handcuff her again when he left, papers said.
Mrs. Knighton also slept chained to the kitchen wall, court papers said.
