PARIS (AP) _ Gerard Bourgoin, the head of French professional soccer's governing body, is under formal investigation for allegedly conducting illicit business dealings, Bourgoin said in a statement Thursday.

Bourgoin, who is president of the French National Soccer League, is being investigated in connection with his management of a now-defunct poultry production group, Bourgoin SA, the statement said.

Judge Jean-Yves Rouxel is heading the judicial investigation, which was prompted by a legal complaint filed by a company with a stake in Bourgoin SA. The company, Societe de defaisance des actifs du Credit Lyonnais, alleged irregular financial transfers between two subsidiaries of the poultry firm.

Bourgoin said he denied ``any misuse or fraudulent activities in the financial operations under question'' when questioned by Rouxel on Wednesday.
