Canadian Government Reclaiming Totem Pole From Lincoln Park
Oct. 02, 1985
CHICAGO (AP) _ A totem pole that has been a landmark in Lincoln Park for more than 55 years is being reclaimed by Canada and will be replaced by a replica next spring.
The ''Kwa Ma Rolas'' totem pole, considered an important example of Kwakuit'l Indian art, will be moved later this month to the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. Experts there will study the pole and try to reverse the effects of weather and vandalism.
Kraft Inc., whose founder brought the totem pole to Chicago and dedicated it to the city's schoolchildren in the late 1920s, has commissioned a replica by Kwakuit'l artist Tony Hunt. It is to be installed in the spring.
