Five Children Die in Texas Apartment Fire
Dec. 02, 2003
ALVIN, Texas (AP) _ Fire swept through an apartment Tuesday, killing five small children and injuring their parents, authorities said.
Alvin Police Chief Mike Merkel said a 4-year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and month-old twins _ a boy and a girl _ died.
The father was in critical condition with severe burns at a hospital in Houston, about 25 miles to the north. The mother suffered leg injuries after jumping or being pushed to safety from a second-floor window of the two-story unit, Fire Chief Rex Klesel said.
The children's bodies were recovered from the second floor. No names were released.
A neighbor, Cruz Camacho, said he ran to get a blanket to cover the mother. Minutes later, Camacho said the father came out the front door screaming: ``My children, my children!''
Another neighbor, Kasi MacCarty, who said she was the twins' godmother, said there were electrical problems in the building. Officials would not speculate on the cause of the blaze, which was confined to the family's dwelling.
``Right now we are going through the debris,'' Merkel said. ``We don't know whether or not it had to do with electrical, but we won't rule that out.''
