BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) _ Thorodd Bakken of Vermont took the men's 10-kilometer skate event, and Lisabeth Johnson of Denver University won the women's 5-kilometer skate Thursday in the opening nordic events of the NCAA Ski Championships.

Utah placed all six of its cross country skiers in the top 16 of their respective races and increased its lead over defending national champion Colorado. Utah has 391 team points to Colorado's 351.5. Vermont is third at 333.5.

Utah's Heidi Selenes, the 1995 champion in the 5K skate, finished in fourth place.

Racers in the skate are sent out at intervals and essentially race against the clock.

Utah's Tor Arne Haugen was second in the men's race, running nearly 30 seconds behind Bakken.

Johnson's winning advantage was narrower, finishing 13.4 seconds ahead of runner-up Cecilie Risvoll of Vermont.

On Friday, the men's and women's slalom events are scheduled. The races conclude Saturday with men's and women's nordic classic races.
