Fuel Tanker Explodes, Killing One
Mar. 13, 1999
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) _ A tanker carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel overturned and exploded on a freeway, hurling fiery debris and killing a motorist.
The 44-year-old driver of the tanker was badly burned in Friday's accident and was in extremely critical condition Saturday.
``I just saw this guy come out of truck fully engulfed in flames and just running,'' witness Vanessa Juarez said. ``His whole body was on fire.''
People used their jackets to beat out the flames.
The motorist, burned beyond recognition, was found in the wreckage of a car more than an hour after the crash, authorities said. The car and tanker collided, but it was unclear whether that happened before or after the truck went out of control.
The force of the explosion hurled flaming pieces of the truck more than 60 yards.
Fullerton is about 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
