Youth Crushed While Looking For Fishing Weights
May. 14, 1988
JONESVILLE, La. (AP) _ A 16-year-old looking for fishing weights was crushed to death when he got too near a heavy steel counterweight at an oil well near his home, authorities said.
George Heath Goins and two friends were in a field between looking for pieces of metal to tie onto their fishing lines when the accident occurred Thursday, the Catahoula Parish sheriff's office said.
The friends told deputies that the 8-inch-thick, 12-inch-wide counterweight pinned Goins against an upright of the well.
Oil wells that operate automatically are scattered throughout the area.
