NEW YORK (AP) _ A jury convicted three young men of viciously beating an off-duty detective who asked them to quiet down outside his apartment early one morning.

Another man who admitted kicking the victim in the face was acquitted.

Sgt. Louis Cosentino was beaten so badly last Oct. 2 that surgeons needed 30 screws and seven titanium plates to put his face back together.

Jason Seletti, 19, Michael Schollin, 20, and Ralph Alio, 17, were convicted of assault Wednesday. They face a maximum sentence of five to 15 years in prison.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed the defendants as violent street punks. Defense lawyers argued their clients were defending themselves against an enraged gunman who never told them he was a police officer.

Samuel Titaley, 20, who was acquitted, had said in a videotaped statement shown to jurors that he kicked Cosentino in the face a couple of times after the sergeant drew his gun.

Five other defendants are scheduled to go on trial in the fall.
