SAN DIEGO (AP) _ A van carrying up to 28 suspected illegal aliens rolled over while being chased by Border Patrol agents Tuesday, and an infant was killed and at least 21 people were injured, officials said.
The occupants of the van were spilled out onto the center divider on state Route 117 near the U.S.-Mexico border when the van rolled when the driver tried to make a U-turn, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Twenty-one people were taken to five different hospitals in Chula Vista, National City and San Diego.
A woman and an infant were flown to Sharp Memorial Hospital. The woman was in fair condition, but the child died of her injuries after being admitted in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Laura Melot.
In a separate case earlier Tuesday, the Border Patrol took 12 undocumented aliens into custody after a chase through National City and onto the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. The chase ended when the aliens' truck crashed into a parked car, police said.
