New Armed Forces Chief Named
Feb. 13, 1986
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) _ The federal legislature Thursday named Col. Humberto Regalado Hernandez as chief of the armed forces. He replaces Gen. Walter Lopez Reyes, who resigned last month.
Regalado Hernandez, 49, was selected from a list of three officials presented to the legislature. The former commander of the naval force garnered 127 of the 134 votes.
Lopez Reyes announced Jan. 30 he would resign his post, but he changed his mind hours later. However, the Armed Forces Superior Council held an emergency meeting a few days later and accepted the resignation.
Honduras returned to civilian rule in January 1982, ending two decades of almost uninterupted military government. Still, the armed forces still are considered to be the country's most powerful political force.
President Jose Azcona Hoyo was inaugurated Jan. 27 in the first peaceful transfer of elected civilian governments in half a century.
