Cubs send Schwarber to Triple-A...Vogt designated for assignment...Carr gets contract extension with Raiders

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have demoted struggling slugger Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa. Schwarber, the fourth overall pick in the 2014 amateur draft, is batting just .171 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs in 64 games. There was no immediate announcement of a corresponding move.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Catcher Stephen Vogt has been designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics. Vogt hit .217 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 54 games this season with 36 starts at catcher and seven as the designated hitter. Oakland also put rookie infielder Matt Chapman on the 10-day disabled list with an infection in his left knee that kept him out of three straight games. And the A's recalled catcher Bruce Maxwell and first baseman/outfielder Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville.
BOSTON (AP) — Boston has renamed a street in honor of retired Red Sox player David Ortiz. Mayor Marty Walsh called the man known as Big Papi a "legend on and off the field" at the ceremony to rename the street near Fenway Park as David Ortiz Drive. Ortiz retired last season after a 20-year major league career, including 14 years in Boston. A bridge near Fenway Park is already named for Ortiz. The Red Sox are scheduled to retire his No. 34 on Friday.
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Ryan Strome. Eberle has 165 goals and 217 assists over 507 career NHL games, all with Edmonton. He has scored at least 20 goals in each of the past four seasons, and had a career-high 34 in 2011-12. Strome has 45 goals and 81 assists in 258 career games with the Isles.
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has finalized a five-year contract extension that will keep him tied to the team through the 2022 season. Carr tweeted today that an agreement has been reached to add five years to his current rookie deal that expires after this season. The contract will be worth $125 million, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because terms were not released.
