May. 25, 1998
PARIS (AP) _ Gunfire erupted today in northern Paris during a ransom delivery in a hostage case, injuring two police officers staking out the exchange.
Paris Police Chief Philippe Massoni said three men were arrested, including the one who opened fire in front of a fast-food restaurant at the Port de Clichy, in the 17th district.
Massoni said the hostage was a young woman but gave no further information. French radio reported that she was freed.
Police were tailing the three men and expected to arrest them when the ransom was delivered, Massoni said.
``For an unknown reason, the people who were to be arrested ... opened fire on the police,'' he said.
Massoni said the men were taken to headquarters for questioning.
Daytime shootouts are unusual in Paris.
