Brother of Whitney Houston Arrested On Drug Charges
Mar. 08, 1996
SHELBY, N.C. (AP) _ Deputies arrested the brother of pop music singer Whitney Houston on drug charges Thursday after spotting him driving erratically in an area known for drug sales.
Gary Garland Houston, 38, was found with five rocks of crack cocaine and a crack pipe in his coat pockets, and struggled with officers during his arrest, deputies said.
Houston, who has sung backup for his Grammy award-winning sister, was held in the Cleveland County Jail and charged with possessing crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest. His rental car was confiscated.
Whitney Houston was acting in ``The Preacher's Wife'' with Denzel Washington in New York Thursday and couldn't be reached for comment, said her publicist, Lois Smith.
Other immediate family members released a statement through Smith: ``We love Gary much. And we're very concerned for him. But we really don't know all the circumstances. And we'll have to wait and see what happens next.''
