NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island congressional delegation says two fire departments will receive over $300,000 in grant funding to help with emergency water responses.
The Newport Daily News reports the grants announced Tuesday will benefit the Newport and Bristol fire departments. Officials say the funding is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Port Security Grant Program.
Newport Fire Chief Brian Dugan said in a statement the funding will provide medical supplies, firefighting equipment and specialty tools for potential oil spills for the department's fireboat.
The Bristol Fire Department will receive a $284,625 to buy a similar emergency boat.
Rhode Island fire departments and other agencies have received nearly $1.75 million in Port Security grants since 2014.
