Iced-over Maine bridge closed on Sunday

VERONA ISLAND, Maine (AP) — People driving on U.S. 1 in the Bucksport area are facing detours.
The Maine Department of Transportation said the Penobscot Narrows bridge was being closed Sunday in hopes that warming temperatures will take care of ice that accumulated on the cables.
The Christmas week ice storm left the bridge coated and authorities say at least five vehicles were damaged and two were totaled when chunks of ice fell from the bridge's cables a week ago.
DOT spokesman Ted Talbot said the bridge that carries U.S. Route 1 over the Penobscot River and connects Verona Island to Prospect could be closed again on Monday, if necessary. He says the forecast calls for rain on Monday.
As a last resort, a crane remains on standby to tap the bridge to loosen ice.
