Ex-schoolmaster sentenced to 48 years for child molestation
Aug. 07, 2017
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A former headmaster of a California seaside, private military-style boarding school was sentenced Monday to 48 years in prison for molesting a 14-year-old cadet in 1999.
Jeffrey Barton maintained his innocence at the sentencing hearing in Vista, California, north of San Diego. He told the judge the accuser lied.
A jury in June found Barton guilty of molesting the cadet from 1999 to 2001 at the all-boys school. The victim reported the abuse in 2013 and said it happened while boarding at the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, north of San Diego, and during school trips.
The conviction came during a retrial of the case after a previous jury deadlocked over the charges.
Attorney Vince Finaldi, who represented the victim, said they were happy the judge gave Barton the maximum sentence.
"We think it's justified due to his crimes and position, and what he did to my client," Finaldi said. "Given the length of the sentence, this means he'll be incarcerated for the remainder of his adult life, and that's exactly where he belongs."
Finaldi said Barton showed no remorse and blamed the victim.
The judge said there was evidence of repeated abuse.
The victim has filed a lawsuit against the school.
