Gymnastics official suspended over corrupt exams
Aug. 07, 2013
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Gymnastics Federation has suspended another senior official over "irregularities" in examination courses for judges.
The FIG says Istvan Karacsony, a Hungarian former member of its men's artistic gymnastics technical panel, is suspended from all events through 2014.
The federation says Karacsony's "title of Honorary Member of the FIG has been rescinded."
Karacsony was disciplined after FIG studied Romanian judge Dragos Birzu's results at a training course held in Bucharest in February. He must sit the examination again.
Both officials can appeal within 21 days.
Last month, FIG expelled its top rhythmic gymnastics official from the London Olympics and suspended six other officials in an exam marking scandal.
That case also implicated 56 judges after courses held in Romania, Russia and Spain, last year.
