INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Hortencia Marcari scored 37 points Thursday as Brazil beat Peru 117-48 - the second straight 69-point loss for the Peruvian team in women's basketball action at the Pan American Games.
Marcari, known internationally by her first name, made 16 of 22 shots from the field and had seven steals as Brazil pulled away early just as the United States had Wednesday night in its 110-41 victory over Peru.
Brazil led 59-27 at halftime and increased its lead to the final margin as the bronze medalists in 1983 shot 58 percent from the field, 49 of 85, compared to Peru's 29 percent effort, 20 of 68.
Brazil plays the United States Saturday and when the teams met in 1983, Marcari, a 5-foot-8 1/4 forward, had 48 points.
Paula Silva added 22 points and eight assists for Brazil, 1-0, while Marta Sobral had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Mariella Picasso's 11 points led Peru, which is still eligible for a medal because all three teams from the pool will advance to the quarterfinals.
