OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ The Oakland Athletics placed pitcher T.J. Mathews on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right shoulder inflammation.

To take Mathews' spot in the roster, the A's recalled outfielder Jason McDonald from Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League.

Mathews is 1-3 with a 6.50 ERA over his last 18 outings. He began the season with a 5-0 mark and an ERA of 1.08 in his first 14 appearances.

``We hope to get him back to throwing the way he was in the first few weeks of the season,'' A's manager Art Howe said.

McDonald was on the A's opening-day roster, but was optioned to Vancouver on May 22 with a .210 batting average. He hit .326 in 32 games for Vancouver.

``We're a little thin in the outfield and we haven't had anybody pinch running,'' Howe said.
