SACRAMENTO (AP) _ Republican Matt Fong is gaining on incumbent Barbara Boxer in their race for the U.S. Senate, according to a San Francisco Examiner poll released Friday.

Boxer has support from 43 percent of those surveyed, compared with 40 percent for state Treasurer Fong, which is a statistical dead heat based on the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

A similar Examiner poll in February showed Boxer with a nine-point lead over Fong. Her lead dropped to five points in a poll taken in May.

The telephone poll surveyed 832 registered California voters likely to vote in state elections. It was conducted Sunday through Tuesday.
