BALTIMORE (AP) _ Harold Baines, Baltimore's designated hitter last season, agreed Friday to a $1.15 million, one-year contract _ the same amount as his base salary in 1997.

Baines, 38, hit .301 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs last season for the Orioles and the Chicago White Sox, and earned $775,000 in performance bonuses to raise his salary to $1,925,000.

Baines has 191 home runs and 792 RBIs.

``He provides us with a veteran left-handed bat and he has always proved to be a very positive influence in the clubhouse,'' Orioles general manager Pat Gillick.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Baines, the team designated third baseman Willis Otanez for assignment.
