SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Steve Lopez threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Michael Windsor with 5:15 left Saturday night to give Chico State a 20-13 victory over San Diego in the season opener for both teams.

The scoring pass came just two plays after San Diego tied the score 13-13 on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

On the game-winning touchdown, the Toreros had a breakdown in their defensive coverage as Windsor was all alone when he caught the ball at midfield and beat the defenders to the end zone.

San Diego had tied the game when tight end Duncan Hardy recovered a fumble by teammate Tim Antongiovanni in the end zone. Antongiovanni had gained 22 yards on a pass reception from James Beck to the Chico State 2-yard line when he fumbled, and Hardy recovered.

The Wildcats took a 13-3 at 1:33 of the final period when defensive back Anthony Canela picked up a fumble and ran 47 yards for a touchdown.

The Toreros made it 13-6 on Matt Young's 24-yard field goal less than two minutes later.

Chico State trailed 3-0 before Lopez threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Jake Hodgson with six seconds left in the third quarter.

San Diego took advantage of three Chico State turnovers in the first half to control the ball for more than 20 minutes. But the Toreros were able to convert the miscues into only three points _ a 35-yard field goal by Young with 41 seconds left in the first quarter.
