STRASBOURG, France (AP) _ Croatia's Silvija Talaja became the first seeded player to advance to the second round of the $170,000 Strasbourg Open, downing Tara Snyder of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Monday.

Talaja, seeded sixth, joined Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, Jana Nejedly of Canada and Anastasia Myskina of Russia in the second round.

Tanasugarn defeated Els Callens of Belgium 3-6, 6-1, 6-3; Nejedly beat Joannette Kruger of South Africa 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; and Myskina downed Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada 6-1, 7-5.

Nathalie Tauziat of France is seeded first. Jennifer Capriati is back to defend the title she won last year.
