GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Police in southern New Jersey arrested a man Thursday after reports of shots fired near a school.
Police in Galloway Township, about seven miles northwest of Atlantic City, responded to a report of shots fired at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday near the Pilgrim Academy.
The school was placed on lockdown, and all schools in the town and in neighboring Port Republic were ordered to shelter in place as a precaution.
After officers secured the school's exterior and interior and determined there were no injuries, it was determined the shots had come from a nearby wooded area.
Police arrested township resident 57-yer-old Michael Maggi and charged him with disorderly conduct, harassment and risking widespread injury.
Police said Maggi had numerous firearms and ammunition at his residence.
Maggi was being held at the Atlantic County Jail on Thursday. A police spokeswoman said Thursday afternoon it wasn't known if he had retained an attorney or when he would be scheduled to appear in court.
