Liverpool will play Chelsea in the League Cup semifinals after Raheem Sterling scored twice in a 3-1 victory over second-tier Bournemouth on Wednesday night, and Tottenham advanced with a 4-0 rout of Newcastle.
Lazar Markovic scored between Sterling's first goals since September.
Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado scored in Tottenham's win. In the draw for the two-leg semifinal in January, Tottenham was paired with third-tier Sheffield United, which upset Southampton to advance on Tuesday.
American defender John Brooks scored his first goal of the season, helping Hertha Berlin to a 4-4 tie at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
Brooks got the game's first goal in the 21st minute. Fellow American Timmy Chandler started for Frankfurt.
Borussia Dortmund conceded a late goal in a 2-2 tie at home against Wolfsburg, which is second, 11 points behind Bayern Munich.
U.S. midfielder Sacha Kljestan scored in the 86th minute, two minutes after entering, for the final goal in Anderlecht's 3-0 win at Zulte-Waregem in the first leg of the Belgian Cup quarterfinals.
The second leg of the total-goals series is Jan. 21 in Brussels.
