NEW YORK (AP) _ Christian Slater admits he was suicidal on the August 1997 night he got drunk and high on cocaine before a scuffle with police that led to his arrest.

``After the fight, I tried to kill myself by jumping off the balcony,'' Slater says in the December issue of Rolling Stone. ``They pulled me back in. ... Not thinking clearly _ not thinking at all _ having chemicals affecting my brain, I just wanted to end it.''

After his arrest, Slater entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, where he learned to control his negative behavior with positive thinking.

``I've been a guy who's been in reaction to life, never really in action,'' Slater said. ``My disease has been in charge, in my opinion, of every decision I make.''

Slater's film credits include ``Pump Up the Volume,'' ``Heathers,'' ``True Romance,'' ``Broken Arrow'' and ``Interview with the Vampire.'' His latest film is ``Very Bad Things.''
