DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) _ A regional leader in eastern Tajikistan was shot and killed Saturday on his way home from the capital, Dushanbe.
Armed assailants killed Sergei Davlatov, as well as his bodyguard and driver, as they were driving in Davlatov's official car toward his home region, Garm, the Interior Ministry said.
Davlatov was a member of Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov's People's Democratic Party.
The ministry said it was considering the attack a terrorist act.
Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia, has been plagued by political violence, despite a 1997 peace agreement that ended a five-year civil war between the hard-line government and mostly Islamic opposition.
