ALBANY, Ga. (AP) _ Anthony Thomas threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tracy Kendall with 1:23 remaining on Saturday and Alabama A&M beat Albany State 25-20.
It was A&M's first game since coach George Pugh was dismissed and nine players were suspended after a student was injured in a fight at an on-campus dance. Ray Bonner, A&M's running backs coach, won his first game as acting head coach.
Hugh Thomas preserved the victory for the Bulldogs (4-3, 4-0 SIAC) when he intercepted Johnny Gilbert at the A&M 21 with 42 seconds remaining.
The Rams had taken a 20-19 lead with 9:42 to play on Gilbert's 11-yard pass to Corey Smith.
A&M's other scoring came on a 8-yard run by Reginald Leslie in the first quarter, a 1-yard run by Terrence Cooper in the second and a 25-yard run by Antoine Harden in the third. The final touchdown was set up by Maurice Houston's 28-yard punt return to the Albany State 25.
Albany State (1-4, 1-4) also scored on Gilbert's 7-yard pass to Kenyan Conner in the opening quarter and Tony Reeves' 1-yard run in the second.
