BEIJING (AP) _ Underground flooding in a coal mine in northeastern China has killed 21 miners, a newspaper said Wednesday.

The accident occurred July 1 at a coal mine near Baishan, a city in Jilin province, the Beijing Evening News reported. It said rescue efforts were finally called off this week and the missing miners declared dead.

The incident added to a rapidly growing death toll in China's coal mines, where thousands of deaths occur each year in fires and flooding.
