RIDGE, N.Y. (AP) — A 23-year-old Long Island man has pleaded not guilty to charges linked to a stolen car crash on Long Island that resulted in five deaths.
Jamel Turner was arraigned Friday in Suffolk County District Court.
Authorities say Turner was speeding before the chain-reaction crash Wednesday in the hamlet of Ridge that involved the stolen car, an oil truck and two other vehicles. One car caught fire, killing four people inside. And a 19-year-old passenger in the stolen car was ejected and killed.
Turner, of Bellport, suffered minor injuries. He was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, false personation, and an outstanding warrant. Prosecutors say they may upgrade the charges.
Turner remained in police custody, with bail was set at $1.2 million. He's due in court on Feb. 22.
