Shipyard Worker Wins Town Council Seat with Five Write-in Votes
May. 06, 1994
DENDRON, Va. (AP) _ Willie Turner wasn't running for Town Council. He didn't even vote. So when someone told him he'd won a seat in the election, he thought it was a joke.
''As far as I know, I'm the only Willie Turner in town,'' he said.
It was no landslide.
The 40-year-old shipyard worker got five write-in votes Tuesday, tying him with another man who wasn't a candidate. Election officials in the town of 300 people broke the tie Wednesday by drawing Turner's name from an envelope.
Five candidates were on the ballot for six vacant seats in the town about 15 miles south of Williamsburg, leaving voters to fill in the sixth.
Turner, who didn't vote because he had to work late, is looking forward to serving, although he says he has been in a council meeting only once.
