STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) _ Mississippi State today hired former Kentucky coach Sharon Fanning as its new women's basketball coach.
Fanning, who took Kentucky to the 1990 NIT championship and the 1991 NCAA tournament, was fired after the Lady Kats finished 14-14 this past season. Fanning was 134-97 in eight seasons there.
``I think that there's talent here,'' Fanning said from Starkville. ``I am excited about the opportunity. I know the SEC.''
In 19 seasons overall as a head coach, including 11 at Tennessee-Chattanooga, the 41-year-old Fanning has a 323-226 record.
``We have had the opportunity to follow Sharon's career at the University of Kentucky,'' State athletic director Larry Templeton said today. ``I was impressed with her ability to teach the game of women's basketball on the college level.''
Fanning, 41, replaces Jerry Henderson, who resigned after six seasons at State. The Lady Bulldogs were 1-10 in the SEC for the second straight year this past season.
