INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Valparaiso pulled out a 19-17 win over Butler on Saturday with a fourth-quarter safety.
Down 17-14, Butler (3-4 overall, 0-3 Pioneer League) was pinned at its own 3 yard line after Kyle Condon intercepted a pass from Valparaiso (3-4, 2-1) quarterback Paul Van dam. After moving the ball to the 4-yard line, Jon Wrench sacked Eli Stoddard in the end zone.
Butler's Shawn Wood cut the lead to 19-17 with 5:36 left on a 29-yard field goal, but Adam Timm intercepted a Stoddard pass at the Valparaiso 47, and the Crusaders ran out the clock.
Van dam hooked up with Eric Zodrow for touchdown passes of 17 and 18 yards, while Eric Strasser kicked a 46-yard field goal for Valparaiso, which was held to 113 yards passing. Five backs gained 213 yards rushing.
It was the opposite for Butler. Stoddard finished the game 18-of-34 for 222 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Conner. Stoddard was intercepted twice and sacked twice. Lucas Marrs scored on a 13-yard run, but the Bulldogs' rushing attack was held to 85 yards on 32 carries.
