May. 12, 2000
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ The red Corvette Mark McGwire got the night he broke the all-time single-season home run record is back in St. Louis.
The Cardinals gave McGwire the '62 Corvette to honor his historic 62nd homer on Sept. 8, 1998, when he topped the record set by Roger Maris in 1961. McGwire hit the homer off the Chicago Cubs' Steve Trachsel.
McGwire had the car restored with the idea of ultimately returning it to St. Louis, the Cardinals said. It went on display Friday at the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum, next to Busch Stadium.
The restoration was done at Reggie's Cars in Seaside, Calif. The restoration business is owned by Reggie Jackson. McGwire, with 534 career homers, is within 29 homers of passing Jackson on the all-time home run list.
