Iranian Forces Kill 9 Guerrillas
Mar. 02, 1998
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) _ Iranian forces killed nine guerrillas from an opposition group as they tried to cross into the country from Iraq, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported Monday.
One Iranian border guard also was killed in Sunday's clash with members of Mujahedeen Khalq near the western town of Mehran, the agency said. Several other guerrillas were injured, IRNA said.
The guerrillas had infiltrated Iran in collaboration with the Iraqi regime, IRNA said.
The report could not be independently verified.
The Mujahedeen Khalq was part of the opposition that overthrew the U.S.-backed shah in 1979, but the group split with the new Islamic government over power sharing.
The Baghdad-based Mujahedeen Khalq, which has 30,000 troops, has been fighting since the 1980s to oust the hard-line Islamic regime.
