Marlborough officer cleared in deadly shooting
Feb. 21, 2013
WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — Investigators have determined that a Marlborough police officer responding to a domestic disturbance in November was justified in fatally shooting a knife-wielding man.
The Middlesex district attorney's office announced Wednesday that Officer Soren Levenson shot 22-year-old Bryce Coutinho only after Coutinho refused several commands to drop his knife. The DA said Levenson was in a tight space and could not back up any further before discharging his department-issued weapon.
Levenson was one of three officers who responded to a city home after a resident called police to say her ex-boyfriend would not leave the house, and was trying to hurt himself.
Coutinho was pronounced dead at the scene.
The district attorney said the matter was being referred back to Marlborough police.
