LIMA, Peru (AP) _ Milk tainted with insecticide killed at least 28 children in an Andean village, many collapsing on their way home from school, officials said.
The children, ranging in age from 3 to 14 years old, apparently received the government-supplied milk Friday in the school of their rural village after it had been fumigated.
Another 28 children were being treated for poisoning at the regional hospital in Cuzco, Delfina Pacheco, a nurse, told The Associated Press. Cuzco is 350 miles southeast of Lima.
The children, from Taucamarca, 40 miles southeast of Cuzco, were fed their breakfast of bread and milk at 11 a.m. They began showing symptoms of the poisoning on their way home from school.
