Polish Woman Rides Nude in Protest
Jul. 06, 2000
WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ A self-styled Lady Godiva was arrested for public lewdness Thursday in Krakow after she rode nude on horseback through the city's scenic Old Town district to protest high taxes.
Three other people also were arrested for organizing a demonstration at the tax office in Krakow under the slogan ``Lady Godiva is back,'' police spokesman Robert Szydlo said.
The protest marked the seventh anniversary of the introduction of a value-added tax in Poland.
According to legend, the original Lady Godiva rode naked through the English town of Coventry in the 11th century to persuade her husband, the earl of Mercia, to reduce heavy taxes.
``The legend is beautiful, and I think that somebody should protest against taxes in that way. Nakedness is natural,'' the PAP news agency quoted the young nude protester in Krakow as saying. She identified herself only as Dziewanna, a model and hostess.
