NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont man has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for repeatedly raping a teenage girl.
The Caledonian Record reports 68-year-old Robert Stacey, of Holland, admitted he raped the girl in a trailer starting in 1998, when she was between the ages of 13 and 15. He also committed a lewd act with a 5-year-old girl.
Stacey pleaded innocent when the charges were first filed in 2012. He was taken into custody after pleading guilty to the two charges in 2014. The case took years to resolve while a life sentence was automatically appealed to the Vermont Supreme Court.
His lawyer said Wednesday that Stacey expressed remorse. He had asked the judge for a lesser sentence so Stacey he could get treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder suffered from service in Vietnam.
