Oct. 01, 1999
SEATTLE (AP) _ Mike Port, former general manager of the California Angels, has interviewed for the Seattle Mariners' general manager job.
Port is vice president for baseball operations with the Boston Red Sox. He met this week with Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln, minority owner Chris Larson and president Chuck Armstrong, whom he has known since he was the Angels' GM from 1984-91.
Earlier, Pat Gillick, general manager for Toronto's world champion teams in 1992-93 and two Baltimore playoff clubs, and former Yankees and Astros GM Bob Watson met with Mariners officials to discuss the job being vacated Oct. 31 by Woody Woodward.
Next week, Armstrong will meet with two assistant GMs, Dan Evans of the Chicago White Sox and Omar Minaya of the New York Mets.
Armstrong plans to interview at least 10 people for the job.
