BEIJING (AP) _ Chinese police have caught 35,000 suspected criminals in a month-long nationwide campaign to ensure stability ahead of the 50th anniversary of Communist Party rule, state media said Monday.

Police caught around 21,000 suspects just in the past five days, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

In all, more than 35,000 suspects have been caught since the campaign was launched July 1 to ``eliminate hidden troubles and create a better environment'' for the Oct. 1 anniversary and for China's resumption of sovereignty over the Portuguese enclave of Macau in December, Xinhua said.

Xinhua did not specify what sorts of crimes those arrested were suspected of committing.
