FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Brad Gilbert stunned fifth-seeded Yannick Noah of France 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) Monday night in the first round of the Paine Webber Tennis Classic.
Several other seeded players struggled in the opening round of the Sanibel Harbour Resort.
In another night match, fourth-seeded Aaron Krickstein slipped past Terry Moor 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-4.
And seventh-seeded Johan Kriek came from behind to fend off unseeded Hank Pfister 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Kriek, whose credits include advancement to the Wimbledon quarterfinals and U.S. Open semifinals, admitted Monday's victory didn't come easily.
''Hank is a very hard player and it is so amazing that players of his type have to play in qualifying rounds in order to get in the tournaments,'' said Kriek.
Also Monday, No.8 seed Scott Davis disposed of Marty Davis 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
In other matches: Greg Holmes defeated Matt Anger, 6-2, 6-2; Dan Cassidy eliminated Jay Lapidus, 6-4, 6-4; Ken Flach beat Robert Van't Hof, 6-4, 6-2; Tom Gullikson outlasted Luke Jensen, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), and Mel Purcell defeated Tim Gullikson, 6-4, 6-3.
And in the third night match, Mel Purcell downed Tim Gullikson 6-3, 6-4.
