PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Steelers signed 18 undrafted rookie free agents on Monday, including Minnesota quarterback Travis Cole.

Signing Cole enabled coach Bill Cowher to keep his pre-draft promise that the Steelers will take a fourth quarterback to training camp.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Cole joins starter Kordell Stewart and backups Tommy Maddox and Tee Martin. Martin is playing in NFL Europe this spring.

Cole started most of his junior season, but spent most of last season backing up Asad Abdul-Khaliz. Cole was 58-of-115 for 765 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. He also pitches for Minnesota's baseball team.

The other 17 signings included every position except offensive guard, defensive tackle and placekicker.

On offense, those signed Monday were center Matt Anderson of Texas; offensive tackles Leon Brockmeier of Northwestern, John Burr of South Dakota and Jermese Jones of Virginia; wide receivers Cedric Cormier of Colorado and Dallas Davis of Colorado State; running back Antwon McCray of Toledo; and fullback Albert Tuipulotu of Portland State.

Defensive signees were ends Bary Holleyman of Oklahoma and Bob Jones of Penn State; linebackers Will Bouton of Furman, Jay Johnson of SUNY Brockport, Pernell Griffin of East Carolina and James Harrison of Kent State; safety Eric Totten of Western Washington; and cornerback Ashante Woodyard of Purdue.

The Steelers also signed punter Burke Dales of Concordia.
