PLANICA, Slovenia (AP) _ Ski jumper Valery Kobelev of Russia suffered a concussion and severe neck bruises in a terrifying crash during qualifying Thursday for a ski flying World Cup competition.

Kobelev, 25, was taken by helicopter to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital.

He was sedated and on a respirator, but a computer scan revealed no brain, head or spine injuries, a hospital statement said.

Kobelev was swept by a gust of wind, lost control in the air and crashed head-first into the landing area of the mammoth ski flying hill in this Slovenian resort. After tumbling down the hill, he was taken away in a stretcher unconscious.

The qualifying session for the final World Cup event of the season was delayed and often interrupted by gusts of wind.
