River Plate beats Arsenal, closes on leader

BUENOS AIRES (AP) — River Plate defeated Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday to move to within three points of leader Colon in Argentina's first division, while bitter rival Boca Juniors won 2-1 against Racing.
Colon drew 0-0 with Gimnasia La Plata on Saturday, while second-placed Velez Sarsfield moved within a point of the lead following its 3-1 win over Belgrano in the seventh round of matches.
In Sunday's other games, Godoy Cruz drew 1-1 with San Lorenzo and Olimpo defeated Newell's Old Boys 1-0.
River Plate striker Fernando Cavenaghi converted from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, improving River to sixth place in the league.
Boca's Cristian Erbes scored the winner against Racing in the 76th, when he tapped in after goalkeeper Sebastian Saja spilled ball from an Emmanuel Gigliotti shot.
Boca had taken the lead through Juan Sanchez Mino's fierce effort in the 25th after being setup by Emanuel Insua down the left, with Racing equalizing through a 68th minute penalty by goalkeeper Saja.
Colon's best chance against Gimnasia came in the 15th, when a shot from Alario was well saved by 'keeper Monetti.
Velez came from behind after Guillermo Farre had put Belgrano ahead in the 13th. Mauro Zarate equalized three minutes after halftime with a finish from a tight angle, before Agustin Allione put Velez ahead in the 62st from close range. Lucas Pratto added the third one minute before the final whistle.
Sah Lorenzo looked to have secured victory against Godoy Cruz when Nicolas Blandi scored in 83rd but Fucundo Castillon leveled the scores in the second minute of stoppage time.
Olimpo held on for a win against Newell's, with Ezequiel Cerutti scoring the sole goal from just outside the penalty area in the 16th.
In other games on Saturday, Lanus won 2-0 against Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes tied Rafaela 0-0.
On Monday, Quilmes face All Boys and Rosario plays Tigre.
