HOUSTON (AP) _ A man was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in the slaying of a retarded 59-year-old who prosecutors say was tortured and beaten to death in a plot to collect on his life insurance.

Terence Singleton, 28, was the fourth of six people to be tried in the slaying of Louis ``Buddy'' Musso, whose body was found in a ditch Aug. 26. Singleton was found guilty Wednesday.

Three other people have been convicted on murder charges. Two more, including the alleged ringleader, are awaiting trial.

Musso died after weeks of beatings at the apartment of one of the defendants. He was forced to kneel naked on a mat during the last days of his life. Between beatings, he was denied food, bathed in cleaning fluids and scrubbed with a wire brush.

A $50,000 life insurance policy had been taken out on Musso, with a provision that more would be paid if he died as the result of violent crime.
