One Dead in Minn. Hayride Crash
Aug. 04, 2001
ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) _ A pickup truck and a tractor pulling a wagon carrying a group of people on a family reunion hayride collided on a rural road, killing one person and injuring 18.
The people on the wagon included members of four generations of one family.
The tractor and wagon were headed up a hill Friday evening when the pickup came over the top of the hill and struck both the tractor and one corner of the hay wagon, authorities said.
The wagon was demolished, said Olmsted County Coroner Dr. Paul Belau. ``People were everywhere.''
The victim was identified as Violet Anna Burdick, 83, of Winona. Others on the ride included her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one as young as nine months, authorities said.
The driver of the truck, Joseph A. Folkert, 20, of rural Elgin, was listed in stable condition Saturday at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, according to a spokeswoman.
One of Violet Burdick's daughters was seriously injured, Belau said.
