_ Karl Malone, Jazz, was named NBA player of the week after averaging a league-high 32.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.33 blocked shots.
_ Tim Duncan, Spurs, the first pick in the NBA draft, was named rookie of the month. Duncan averaged 15.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.56 blocked shots and 1.9 assists in 35.4 minutes. He led rookies in scoring, rebounding, minutes played and was fourth in field-goal percentage.

Sam Cassell had 26 points and 10 assists Monday night in New Jersey's 100-95 loss at Utah.
All-Star guard Latrell Sprewell was suspended indefinitely Monday after assaulting Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo at practice. Sprewell, the team's leading scorer with a 21.4 average, will lose $935,000 of his $7.7 million salary if the suspension lasts 10 games.
New Jersey's Sam Cassell made all 12 free throws in Tuesday night's 100-95 loss at Utah. Cassell was 0-for-4 from the line in Sunday night's win at Sacramento.
New Jersey rookie Keith Van Horn, an All-America at the University of Utah, didn't dress for Monday night's 100-95 loss at Utah, but received a standing ovation when he appeared on the Jumbotron screen. The Nets said Van Horn, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury, might play in Wednesday's home game against Seattle.
