Jury Chosen in Gary Coleman Case
Feb. 03, 1999
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ A jury has been chosen to hear misdemeanor assault and battery charges against Gary Coleman, who is accused of punching an autograph-seeker.
The former child star of the NBC series ``Diff'rent Strokes,'' which ran from 1978 to 1986, has pleaded innocent.
Bus driver Tracy Fields said the 30-year-old former actor, who now works as a security guard, agreed to give her an autograph. She claims he became angry when she asked him to personalize it for her son.
Coleman's attorney, Adam London, said Tuesday that Ms. Fields is trying to exploit his client's stardom to ``gain fame and fortune.'' Ms. Fields also has filed a $1 million civil lawsuit against Coleman.
If convicted, Coleman could be sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, and could lose his security guard license, said police Lt. James McInerny.
